Where To Get Your Protein

One of the most important things you can put into your body is protein, even though many people fail to make sure they are getting enough of it. For some of us, we don't get enough of it because we choose not to eat meat. Others of us do not take the time to consider what we are eating, and this is why we do not get enough protein. And of course, some people really just plain forget to care! Whatever the case, it is absolutely vital for you to begin recognizing the importance of protein. Here are some tips on foods you can consume to make sure you get your protein.

Of course, the best source of protein is meat. While red meat gives you protein, it also gives you fat and other stuff you probably do not want in your body. You might want to consider such lean meats as chicken and fish instead. Fish is one of the best things you can put into your body!

Nuts are another great source of protein, especially for those who choose not to eat meat, or who just don't like meat. There is, however, one problem with nuts, and it is the fact that nuts are high in cholesterol, and should therefore not be consumed in large doses.

But there are also plenty of non-traditional sources of protein. Protein powder can be added to a fruit smoothie, which will give you the goodness of fruit with the protein of meat. These can be made at home or purchased at such places as Smoothie King and Jamba Juice. There is also the option of protein bars. Some people find that protein bars are not as tasty as protein smoothies, but they are easy to take with you and eat on the go. Just grab one from your pantry, bring it with you, and eat it wherever you are!

Whether you get your protein from meat, eggs, nuts, or some other source, you need to make sure that you are giving your body a healthy amount each day. The recommended amount of protein each day is 50 grams, and it sure does not hurt to get more than that. If you have realized that you are not giving your body as much protein as it needs, start making some changes. Your body will thank you down the road!

Edamame the Snack of Healthy Champions

Edamame is a great bean that may not be familiar to you yet. You can usually find Edamame in the freezer section of your grocery store. If you purchase edamame in the pod, you must remove the seeds. Removing the seeds is very simple though so don't worry. Removing the beans only takes a small amount of pressure to remove them. Edamame is also know as green soybean.

Used in both Japanese cooking and vegetarian fair, there are a bunch of recipes to experiment with with your edamame. The reason for this is edamame has gained favor is because it is an outstanding source of protein. Our bodies require certain amino acids to function.  Proteins that contain all of these amino acids are called complete.  This bean is a complete protein. Vegetarians love this bean because it is a complete protein and there are not many vegetable sources of complete protein.

Edamame is a great source of iron for our bodies. One cup of shelled beans contains 17 grams of protein, twenty percent of iron, and sixteen percent of vitamin C. Edamame is also contains high dietary fiber and has a low glycemic index number.

Although edamame is poisonous when raw, it is very easy to cook safely. There are a plethora of ways to cook edamame. You can boil or steam the beans for starters. Boiling Edamame in very salty water is a great way to add some extra flavor.

If you are allergic to soy, do not eat edamame. Edamame is great though for people who have gluten allergies. There is no gluten in edamame since it is a legume. If you don't want to have to worry about cooking edamame, it can sometimes be found dry roasted in the snack sections of the store.  These are great out of hand or sprinkled over salads.

Give green soy a try, it is a tasty nutricious option. Again look in the freezer section of your local store, you may be surprised to see a bag of edamame there. Health food stores may also carry different options when it comes to edamame and soy prodcuts, so check them out too.

Learning About Antioxidants

Very few people have a desire to be sick, but there are also far too few people who know that antioxidants are one of the best ways to prevent you being sick. Antioxidants, to explain them in the most foundational manner, prevent or impair the oxidation of other molecules. Of course, this might sound like a bad thing, but actually, there are molecules that you probably do not want oxidized! For instance, brain disease is closely associated with the oxidation of certain molecules. Furthermore, antioxidants can prevent heart disease. Finally, through exercise you can open yourself up to over-oxidation, which can lead to muscle fatigue. Because of all this, it is vital for each person to understand what antioxidants are and to also understand how to get antioxidants into the body.

Vitamins, such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E, are examples of antioxidants. This means that many fruits and vegetables are a great source for antioxidants. If you have a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables, you will be introducing more antioxidants into your body, and you will be decreasing your body's susceptibility to disease.

Another great source of antioxidants is fish. Salmon and flounder are specially great fish, as they not only provide antioxidants, but provide proteins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids as well. Furthermore, you should cook this fish in extra virgin olive oil, which will further increase your antioxidant intake.

Finally, three of the easiest ways to get antioxidants into your body, is by drinking green tea, drinking red wine, and eating dark chocolate. Of course, chocolate and wine are not good for your body in excess, but both are wonderful for your body in small doses. And as for green tea, it is a thoroughly relaxing way by which to introduce extra antioxidants into your body. Each of these three is a very easy and even enjoyable way to keep your body healthy by introducing antioxidants.

While it is very easy to just consume whatever we want and not pay attention to what is good and what is bad, it is nearly as easy to actually learn and pay attention. And not only is it relatively easy, but it can go a long, long way in improving our health and our overall enjoyment of life.

Proven Methods for Preventing Insomnia

If you have chronic insomnia, you're probably sick and tired of being tired. It may help you to know most people deal with insomnia from time to time, and there are solutions to this pesky problem. Try the following suggestions as you seek solutions:

Exercise every day (but not right before bed). Try to get in some form of cardio exercise each day; the hormones you’ll release and the stress relief will combat your insomnia.

Make a deliberate effort to let go of any thoughts that are concerning you. If you have a high stress job or life situation, you may want to try releasing your stress each night before you go to bed. Consider writing in a diary, reviewing your plan for the next day to be sure you've considered everything, talking to someone, putting out your clothes for the next day, or meditating on the issues that bother you, intentionally letting go of stress.

Follow the same bedtime routine every night. Take time to do proper self care (brush teeth, wash up, etc) and then to do something calming right before bed. Instead of losing yourself in a movie or playing on your computer, try stretching, reading, or practicing breathing exercises. Do the same routine every night, just before bed, for best results.

Chronic insomniacs should limit use of the bedroom to sleeping. Instead of using your bedroom as a living room, reserve it for sleeping activities.

Keep the temperature on the cooler side. Most people find it optimal to set the temperature a little cooler and pile on the blankets.

Make sure there are no unwanted lights in your bedroom. Those annoying led lights may be keeping you up. Cover them up or turn them away from you whenever possible.

Low lighting is for more than romance - it's also good for sleep. Use low wattage bulbs and put up black out shades if outside lights are keeping you up.

How to Green Your Hair Care

People are beginning to learn how to go green in many areas of their life not just the most obvious places. People don't want to expose themselves or the environment to the chemicals any more so they are looking for alternatives.

Some people are tossing their shampoos in favor of home made bar soaps. Don't compare these to your average bar of soap. These are soaps tailored to hair care routines. Combinations of different oils are added and lye is used to create the saponified soap.  Believe it or not these bars of soap are incredibly mild.  There is a lot of glycerine and oils left in these bars of soap that leave you hair and skin moisurized and healthy.

These bars are sulfate and sulfite free and some people find that their hair is much healthier without these chemicals. If you have soft water, it is easy to use these bars. If you live in an area with hard water, you may need to rinse your hair with a black tea rinse to remove any build up on your hair caused by the hard water.

Some people are beginning to dye their hair with henna. Henna when used as a hair dye imparts a very red tint to your hair. This is a permantent dye and basically the only thing you can do with it is cut it off if you decide you are tired of the color. The color of henna in hair can range from an orange/red color all of the way to red/burgandy.  This is dependant on the color of your natural hair. As you continue to dye your hair with henna it becomes richer and darker in color. People constantly comment on how much their hair shines when they use henna.  Some people with curly hair also report that their hair has relaxed a bit since starting to use it.

Red is the only color henna is capabe of dying.  If you see a package claiming to be brown or black henna don't purchase it. This may have very dangerous chemicals added to it to create these other colors. Also make sure you are purchasing body art quality henna, as these are the least likely to contain these other chemicals. Henna can certainly dye your hair a great red if that is the color you like in your hair.

It is always interesting to see what is happening in the Going Green trend.  We will see if some of these alternatives catch on. You can find out more about these alternative treatments on many webpages and forums, so it is at least getting some following. Do a bit some further research on these issues if you are interested there is a lot to learn.

Increase Your Health By Walking

You need to keep your body's cardiovascular system in good shape if you want to keep your body healthy. Walking is one of the easiest and most effective of all the ways you can go about trying to do this. Walking is a low-impact workout, which means that your joints will not feel sore afterward. Walking can also be very effective when done regularly. However - believe it or not - there are actually right and wrong ways of walking! By using this guide, you can learn how to walk in way that helps your body rather than hurting it.

Because many people know that walking is an effective and easy way to keep their body in shape, they try to take the time to add some walking into their schedule. At the same time, however, a lot of people also fail to grasp the fact that they must have the right equipment for walking. You cannot just walk with any old clothes and shoes on that you want. You need good walking shoes, otherwise you will put your feet and back at risk of becoming sore. Also, you want to wear clothes that are designed for breathability. If you are walking during the summer, when your body will need to sweat, this is especially the case.

Another important thing to remember about walking is that you have to do it consistently. If you walk only once a week, or once every other week, it will not be very effective. It also will not help you a whole lot if you decide to walk every day for a couple weeks, and then take a couple weeks off. You need to walk at least three or four days per week in order for walking to work.

Finally, when it comes to walking, you need to realize that it will require a bit more time than some other workouts might. While an intense workout might only require 10 or 15 minutes of your time each session, you should try to walk for at least 30 minutes each time you go out. Walking will make a difference if you make sure that you get your body to the level it reaches after this amount of walking.

Walking is perhaps the easiest and most relaxing form of working out. Walking will also make a big difference in your health, as long as you make sure you are going about it the right way - walking with the right equipment, walking consistently, and walking for enough time.

How to Begin a Meditation Practice

image

If you've decided to start a meditation practice, but are unsure where to start, you'll be relieved to hear it's easy to do. The following guidelines will help you establish a meditation practice that you’ll be sure to find rewarding.

Educate yourself on types of meditation philosophies. You could also go to a meditation retreat center or visit a meditation group to speak to other people who have practiced for years. When you hear about other people's experiences with meditation and witness group meditation and instruction, you will understand the philosophies better.

To get the most out of your meditation practice, spend time setting up a special spot. If possible, reserve one part of your house just for meditation. You may wish to reserve a corner of your sunroom, office, or bedroom as your special spot. Paint and decorate with respect, honoring the ways color influences your meditative mood. Make sure you have a comfortable place to sit for long periods of time; a meditation rug or set of cushions may be helpful. Buy an alarm clock so you can set the timer and focus on meditating without worrying about how much time has passed.

If you'd like to use props, feel free to purchase tuning bowls or soothing music. Many people find they enjoy the scents of aromatherapy candles or incense when meditating. Some people like to set up an alter upon which they place significant totems such as religious statues, memorabilia, or pictures of significance. Decorate your meditation space such that it inspires you and draws you in.

When you feel ready to begin your practice, commit to a specific amount of time for daily meditation. Relax in a comfortable position and prepare to engage in your first meditation session. Close your eyes and pay attention to either your breath or a particular chosen word. Over time, you will see your focus improve, and soon you will wonder how you ever made it through the day without meditation.

Getting Sleep The Natural Way

If you have ever dealt with an inability to sleep - where you lie in bed for hours each night, tossing and turning - you surely understand how taxing this can be. And even though there are sleeping pills you can try that will help you fall asleep, these sleeping pills also mess with your body in other ways. Many people feel depressed when they take sleeping pills, or they wake up feeling groggy and hungover, unable to function properly the next day. Rather than putting your body through this, a better approach is to indulge in natural sleep aids that will enable you to rest without packing your body full of that negative stuff.

Valerian is one of the most effective herbs to help you sleep, and unlike sleeping pills, valerian is not addictive. And even though valerian is not for everyone, as some people find that it does not work for them, those for whom it does work will also find that valerian does not leave them feeling groggy in the morning. You should also avoid valerian if you are simply looking for a quick fix; this is because valerian takes a couple weeks to start working!

Another natural element that is great for helping you sleep is melatonin, which can be purchased at any pharmacy. The human body naturally produces melatonin, but with the addition of extra melatonin, the amount of melatonin in your body will increase, and you will be better able to sleep. Some people find that melatonin causes them to be drowsy, so make sure you test melatonin out on yourself on a night when you have nothing important the next day.

Probably the best way of all to help yourself get better sleep - and certainly the most natural way - is by relaxation techniques. Regardless of whether you want to try something simple to relax - such as stretching and drinking tea - or a more complex approach like taking up yoga and meditation, relaxing will help ease you into sleep. And of course, when you take this approach, you do not risk any sort of side effects that can come from ingesting something orally!

If you have trouble sleeping, it is easy to succumb to the option of getting some sleeping pills; but before you go this route, think twice, and first try these natural sleep aids!
