If you've hoped you could get into running, but found the initial workouts to be too difficult, take heart. If you don't ease into running, you'll find yourself wearing out too fast because running is truly challenging exercise. The best way to evolve from walking to running is to gradually run more and walk less so that the exercise sessions are never too difficult. It’ll take time and perseverance, but eventually you’ll get there.

Try the stopwatch method of working from walking to running. Your handy dandy stopwatch can be an incredibly effective training tool. You'll begin your exercise session by walking until your muscles are warm. Next increase your pace until you are running at a comfortable pace, running until you feel it getting to be too difficult to be enjoyable. Pay attention to how long you were able to run while feeling comfortable. Don't be discouraged if it's as little as 30 seconds. Reduce your pace to a walk and catch your breath for double the time you were able to run and enjoy it. Keep timing yourself as you walk and run, making sure you walk double the time you spend running. As you progress through workouts, you'll want to reduce the amount of time you spend walking such that you walk an equal amount of time as you run, and then half the time you run, and eventually cut walking out altogether.

Another effective way to work your way into running is to let a heart rate monitor be your guide. A heart rate monitor is one of the best tools for easing your way into running. Calculate out what your fat burning zone heart rate is, and then set out for your workout by walking. Once your muscles are warmed up, start running, watching your heart rate monitor, pushign yourself until your heart rate is up in your fat burning zone. When your heart rate monitor reports that you have hit the top of your fat burning zone, change your pace to a walk until your heart rate drops to the lower end of your fat burning zone. Keep running and walking, always keeping within your fat burning heart rate zone, so you'll have an exercise session that is challenging but not too hard. After several workouts like this, you'll discover you can run the entire time, but still be in your fat burning zone.

These two methods take time, but they work.

When you've got a headache, you can't think about anything else. This simple primer will help you identify what is causing your headaches so you can find ways to eliminate them.

When you have a headache, basically you're responding to the swelling of vains and muscles in your scalp. Those sensitive nerves shout an alarm to the brain, telling you in no uncertain terms that they do not like this swelling. The end result is a terrible headache.

The most commonly reported headache is the tension headache. A tension headache feels as if someone wrapped a rubber band around your head. You can usually identify a tension headache by the pressure you feel across the front or back of your head. Menstruation, dehydration, noise, exhaustion, sugary foods, and stress are all triggers for this kind of headache. You can usually cope with a tension headache by lying down, getting a massage, using a cold compress, or simply getting away from the source of stress.

The second most commonly reported headache is related to sinus pressure. You may feel this headache radiating down from the crown to spots on your face, as pressure from the sinus cavities causes this condition. Try drinking fluids, clearing your sinuses, massaging your temples and sinuses, and taking hot showers.

If you get a migraine headache, you may be knocked off your feet altogether. Migraine headaches are severe in nature, causing nausea and vomiting, visualization of stars or bursts of light, sharp stabbing pains, dizziness, and painful sensitivity to light, sounds, and smells. You maybe able to cope with your migraine if you can find a dark, peaceful place where you will not be disturbed.

If a headache is accompanied by high fever, convulsions, loss of muscle control, or the inability to communicate clearly and cohesively, you will want to visit the emergency room to rule out meningitis, stroke, or encephalitis.

Most headaches are not severe and can be controlled by dietary or environmental adjustments. Hopefully a couple analgesics (like ibuprofen) and a nap will set you feeling right again. However, you'll want to consult your doctor if your headaches keep coming back or don't go away with simple remedies.

Have you ever been stressed out and wondered if you should try meditating, but then laughed off the idea? Meditation delivers excellent health benefits at a bargain price; it’s free. Take into consideration these scientifically proven health benefits.

Meditation is an excellent stress-buster. If you're a typical American, you probably live a stressful life and pack too much into your schedule. If you meditate for as little as a quarter of an hour each day, your body will show lower levels of cordisol. What’s cortisol? It’s a hormone your body produces when stressed as part of your fight or flight response, and it can wreak havoc on your nerves and immune system if produced in high levels.

Meditation is good for your heart. Every time you meditate, your body responds by lowering your blood pressure and slowing your heart rate. It is also believed to bolster your body’s ability to heal, which is why the Mayo Clinic recommended daily meditation for its cancer patients and provides classes on how to meditate.

Meditation supports mental focus and feelings of serenity. When studied, monks who meditated regularly were found to have more activity between neurons and synapses than those who did not meditate. The monks also had larger hippocampuses, the piece of your brain that makes you feel good. In general, people who practice meditation see improvement in mental focus.

What is a good way to start meditating? Establish a time and place for meditating each day; you may want to start out with something reachable, like fifteen minutes a day. Find a quiet place, set a timer, sit comfortably, and close your eyes. Focus on a single word and repeatedly guide your mind back to that thought. Distracting thoughts will try to dissuade you, but you will ignore those thoughts and return to the one chosen word. Stay still and focus on that word until your alarm goes off. Increase your meditation commitment by small increments until you’ve established a meditation practice you find rewarding.

If you are a man looking to start taking a multivitamin, you might wonder why there are so many options, and why there is such a great range of prices. Some people pick up the least expensive option when it comes to multivitamins, assuming it probably does not matter; other people do the opposite, picking up the most expensive option and thinking that this one is automatically the best one. And between these two extremes, the truth actually lands somewhere in the middle - and is a bit more complicated as well!

For one thing, as far as complications go, many multivitamins for men include folic acid, but a study conducted by Harvard in 2008 showed a link between folic acid and colon cancer. This means that - unless your doctor has instructed you to do otherwise - you should try to find multivitamins that contain no folic acid.

There is also the thinking that "vitamins are vitamins," which is why some people imagine the least expensive options work just as well as the most expensive options. And even though this is true - vitamins are vitamins - you also need to take a look at which vitamins are included in a multivitamin - as well as how much of each vitamin is included. While some multivitamins have a great variety of vitamins in them, they do not have a high amount of any of these vitamins. And while some multivitamins capitalize on having high content when it comes to certain vitamins, they do not include many other vitamins.

When you are shopping for multivitamins, three good options to look at are Up and Up (which is Target's brand, and is an inexpensive option), Men's One a Day, and GNC Mega Man - all three of which contain lots of the vitamins you need each day, and all three of which dissolve well upon entering your body.

By taking good multivitamins, you can make sure that you get all the vitamins into your body that you need without having to do so by keeping track of all the foods you eat. This will keep you significantly more healthy in the long run - for a cost that is minimal!

Are you in a stressful situation and need stress relief this very moment? Can't make it another moment? The following five stress relief tips will help you immediately.

Take a break from whatever it is that is pushing you over the edge. If a meeting is out of control, excuse yourself to the restroom. Are your children fighting like crazy? Separate them, pretend you have to make a phone call, and lock yourself in the bedroom for a moment. Is your partner being overly emotional? Ask your partner for some time to clear your head. Is the stressor a long term and overarching issue? Schedule a day off. Just by getting out of the stressful situation, you will feel better as your stress level sinks. Make good use of that break.

Inhale deeply. Deep breathing exercises force your body to return to a more normal physical response, instead of staying in fight or flight mode. Don't think about anything except how it feels to breathe slow, deep, even breaths. When you feel relaxed, you can try to deal with the stressor once again.

Put the problem at hand into perspective. Consider if this situation will matter in a week or month or year. Is your job on the line? Your relationship with your child or spouse? Is this a life-threatening situation? Think of the other parts of your life that are positive. Seek out answers. Figure out what your responsibility is.

Come up with a course of action. Once you’ve gained perspective, think through what you can do about the situation. Let go of what you can’t change, figure out actions you can take, and trust your efforts will be enough.

Re-engage with a positive, relaxed, proactive attitude. If when you return to the situation, emotions are still running high, you may need to help the other people involved relieve their stress. Look for ways to talk them down off the ledge, seeking common ground and solutions.

You need to actively manage your stress. If your life is high-stress, you may want to build stress relief techniques into your daily routine.

You may have seen people with one of those big exercise balls in their home and thought to yourself, "There is no way that thing really works." But rather than simply assuming that these things do not work, it is better to actually research and find out for yourself. And you just might be surprised what you turn up when you do some research on the GoFit ball!

First off, you should be aware that many different companies make exercise balls, and not all exercise balls are created equal; some have a tendency to become sticky over time, or to pop easily. The GoFit is the premier exercise ball, and it is extremely durable, with no stickiness or odor! And best of all, the GoFit works great without forcing you to spend a bunch of money on it; for instance, for the 65 centimeter ball - along with an instructional DVD - you will spend only $33 (and it is only 24 dollars if you shop for it on Amazon!).

If you decide that you want to purchase a GoFit ball, keep this in mind: when picking a size, you should judge it based off the length of your legs, rather than based off your height. This is an important consideration to keep in mind, as you will find that GoFit suggests sizes based on height, but this should be adjusted accordingly if your legs are long or short for your height.

So then, the question becomes: "Sure, it doesn't cost much money, but does it actually work?"

The short answer to this question is: If you use it correctly, on a regular basis, it absolutely works! You need to keep the ball inflated to the proper size (it comes with an air pump as well) and use it several times per week; if you do this, you will significantly strengthen your core. Furthermore, if you have had back problems - even if the back problems have been severe - the GoFit can improve your back!

You can actually have a fun, easy workout, for a very reasonable price; the investment in a GoFit is well worth it, as you surely will see if you buy one yourself!

Even though coffee is entirely legal - as evidenced by the prevalence of coffee shops all across every town - it is still a stimulant that is actually very similar to a drug. Of course, coffee does not have the adverse effects on the body that many drugs have, but if you try to quit drinking coffee, you will find that the withdrawal symptoms can certainly make you feel like you are quitting something much harder than coffee! If you have found that you are dependent on coffee, and you want to break this cycle, here are a few tips for weaning yourself off coffee - without experiencing the headaches and fatigue many others experience!

Slowly cut back: If you slowly cut back on your coffee intake, you will eventually get to a place where you you no longer need it. The first step of cutting back is to figure out exactly how many milligrams of caffeine you consume in a day; once you have come up with this figure, try to cut twenty percent off this original level of caffeine every week, until you are finally no longer in "need" of coffee!

Find alternatives: There are certainly a lot of alternatives to coffee - but realize that this does not mean you should switch to energy drinks instead! There are plenty of foods that are "energy foods," and once you start adding these foods to your regular diet, you will find that it is much easier to cut coffee out of your diet.

Drink water: More than anything else, your body needs water, so when you start cutting back on coffee, you should help your body make the transition by giving it as much water as you can. Water will make it less likely that you end up with those nasty caffeine headaches, and you will also have a lot more natural energy when you drink water.

Coffee is not horrible for your body the way a drug is, but it is always nice to be able to have coffee as a "treat" instead of because you are dependent on it; once you follow these tips, you will be that much closer to cutting coffee off your "needs" list completely!

If you "force" your children to play outside, they are less likely to enjoy it; recognize this, and recognize that many children will feel rebellious when they are told they "have to" do something. What you should do instead is create opportunities for your children to "discover" the joys of playing outdoors. You can take huge strides toward accomplishing this by doing these two things: 1) Limit the amount of "media time" your children can have each day, and 2) Take some time to play outside with them!

Your children will begin to naturally gravitate toward the outdoors as their computer, television, and video game time is limited each day. And if you go outside and play with your children a few times, it will further draw them out of the house and help them get started.

Although some children will take to the outdoors naturally, automatically playing outside without any nudge from you, this is not always the case; not to worry - just follow these tips, and you will notice your children playing outside more and more.

When you hear the word "vitamin," you know that it is likely something that is important for you to get into your body. But one of the most important vitamins to make sure you get enough of is vitamin D, whose health effects include bone health, health in your immune system, and even prevention of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. And while you can eat certain foods or take certain supplements to get vitamin D, the best way to get it is to spend time in the sun; this is because the sun's rays enable your body to produce vitamin D on its own. But as much as most of us enjoy the sun - and as important as we might realize vitamin D is - it can still be difficult to get out in the sun every day.

You should aim to get twenty minutes of sun each day, but the main reason many people are unable to do this is because of work. With work, most people only have the weekends remaining in order to get vitamin D, and this is not enough time!

When you get home from work in the evening, consider taking a nice walk through your neighborhood; in the summer, the sun is usually up late enough that you can get some sun on your body by doing this. You can also go for a jog in the evening when you get home from work, as this will get you out in the sun as well.

While you are at work during the day, you can also take walks, fitting them in during lunch or even in short breaks during the day - which can actually be good for work as well. By taking short "walk breaks" during the day, you can collect your thoughts while also getting vitamin D into your body!

Perhaps the most relaxing way of all to get vitamin D from the sun is to eat your lunch outside. It is healthier for your body if you pack a lunch, and if you do so, it will give you plenty of time during which you can find a nice, grassy area in which to enjoy your meal.

Not only will your body begin to be healthier when you get enough sun on it, but you will also start to feel quite a bit healthier!

Over the last several years, many people have shifted from scoffing anytime they hear someone talk about home remedies to taking home remedies much more seriously. As people become more aware of the dangers of certain medicines and the benefits of living a healthy, natural lifestyle, they look for ways to cure themselves at home. And to the surprise of many of these people who used to scoff at home remedies, many of them actually work!

If you want to get into home remedies (or even if you just want to try them out and find out more about them), the first thing you need to know is the importance of prevention. While you can learn all you want about making illnesses go away, any illness is easier to get rid of in the early stages. And to an even greater extent, any illness is much easier to prevent altogether than to get rid of.

In order to prevent yourself from being ill, you should pay close attention to the foods you consume, making sure they are as organic as possible. You are far less likely to get sick with any sort of frequency when the foods you are putting into your body have not been so processed.

If you are still getting sick, despite eating in a preventative manner, you can find out how to get better without ever leaving the house by learning home remedies. And furthermore, when you compare the cost of medicine to the cost of home remedies, you will find that you are saving money as well. And when you use home remedies, you will often find that you become healthy even more quickly than you would with medicine, all while putting only natural elements into your body!

As you learn more and more about your body, you will realize more and more how great it is to only put things in your body that belong in there. The more natural you keep your eating habits and your healing habits, the healthier your body will be in the long run. And if the primary purpose of medicine is to make you healthier, it only makes sense to learn as much as you can about the alternatives to medicine if these will make you even healthier!
